SUNDAY, JUNE 12
2:00-5:00pm Holiday Music Motel Parking Lot – “A LOT of Music!” FREE (see below) 5:30-8:00pm After Party - Venue TBA (passes required) CHECK BACK FOR MORE INFO SOON!!! Steel Bridge SongFest Celebrates 5th Annual “Construction Zone” at The Holiday Music Motel with Special Sunday Performance
Sunday June 12th, 2-5pm It may or may not be a little known fact that “The Holiday Music Motel” was brought into existence largely inspired by Steel Bridge SongFest. Established in 1952 as “The Holiday Motel,” the business existed for 50+ years simply as a travelers respite. Things would change drastically in 2006 when pat mAcdonald invited several of his closest songwriting friends from all around the country to come to Sturgeon Bay to participate in a week-long collaborative songwriting and recording experience. Arranging for the writers to write and record at the motel, then owned by Marilyn and Pete DeVaney, the first Steel Bridge “Construction Zone” was born and the first volume of “Steel Bridge Songs” was recorded. In a moment of inspiration, Anna Sacks, one of the songwriters, dreamed out loud, “wouldn’t it be great if we bought a motel and did this year-round?” mAcdonald inquired and it just so happened that the Holiday Motel was up for sale. mAcdonald and Sacks, along with mAcdonald’s sister Christie Weber, leaped into action and rallied for investors to help them to realize their dream of establishing a creative mecca for musicians and artists to return to year after year; a mecca that would not only continue to be a “home away from home” for weary travelers but would also extend itself to the community by cultivating and supporting a music and art scene in Sturgeon Bay. The motel was purchased by a group of investors (including Jackson Browne) in 2007 and has stayed steadfast in its mission quickly becoming not only a fulcrum for a host of music events--Steel Bridge SongFest’s “Construction Zone” as its flagship--but also earning its place as an integral part of the development of the community. In celebration of the conclusion of Steel Bridge SongFest’s 7th annual event (and the 5th to take place at the motel), The Holiday Music Motel will host a special event Sunday afternoon, June 12th, in their parking lot at 30 N 1st Ave from 2-5pm (indoors if raining. Check website for location). This all-ages, family event will feature a host of Steel Bridge SongFest “Construction Zone” writers and performers such as Freedy Johnston, Eric McFadden, Ruby James, Adam Mackintosh, Anna Sacks, Adrienne Hatkin, Storitela, Victoria Vox and more... performing songs that were written and recorded within their walls. Free and open to the public, all are welcome to enjoy this casual relaxed conclusion to the action-packed week of writing, recording and onslaught of performances that took place at over a dozen venues throughout Sturgeon Bay. |
